Novel juxtaposes human, ant societies to explore survival, evolution, social structures
For the first time, Bernard Werber's popular book "Empire of the Ants" is being turned into a webtoon adaptation. This is a significant event since it marks the first time this highly regarded intellectual property has been transformed into this format.
During a news event in South Korea on September 3rd, Werber stated that webtoons are a valuable tool for connecting with younger audiences via smartphones. He was thrilled that Empire of the Ants could reach new fans through this platform. After viewing the first two episodes, he praised the vertical scrolling format, describing it as a cinematic experience.
The book "Empire of the Ants" was first released in France in 1991. It compares human and ant societies to examine themes like survival, evolution, and social structures. After being translated into Korean in 1993, it has consistently sold well. Producers made sure that the adaptation process was thorough before making any changes.
The upcoming webtoon series is planned to have around 150 episodes that will be released in Korea and France simultaneously starting in November 2025. While distribution details are still being finalized, French readers can access it through Ono platform. Kenaz CEO Woo-jae Lee stated that they are currently in talks with more than 100 platforms from 30 countries for distribution of this series.
Yong-hwe Kim will draw the series, while Kenaz will oversee production and distribution.
