Nintendo, Sony co-finance movie from Maze Runner director Wes Ball
On Friday, Nintendo revealed through their new app, Nintendo Today!, that the worldwide release of the live-action movie based on the popular video game franchise, The Legend of Zelda, is set for March 26th, 2027. An accompanying video on the app featured the iconic background music from the NES version of the game during the announcement.
The film project has received significant financial support from both Nintendo and Sony. Wes Ball will direct the film, while Shigeru Miyamoto, a franchise co-creator and Nintendo representative, will produce it along with Arad Productions Inc.'s Chairman, Avi Arad. Derek Connolly, known for his work on Jurassic World, has been tasked with writing the script. Additionally, Sony will handle distribution for the film.
Discussions about making a movie based on the franchise have been going on for some time now, involving the writers of the Detective Pikachu film.
In 2015, Netflix was rumored to be developing a live-action Legend of Zelda TV show according to The Wall Street Journal. However, Nintendo denied these reports. Later in 2019, it was reported that Adi Shankar was in discussions about producing a Legend of Zelda TV show. Shankar later confirmed on Instagram that he was actually working on an animated Devil May Cry TV show that premiered on April 3.
After the release of the successful 3D animated movie "The Super Mario Bros.", which premiered in the U.S. as well as over 60 other countries in April 2023, there was an official statement made.
In September 26th, 2020, Nintendo Switch released its first major game in the series featuring Zelda as the primary character instead of Link. This game, called "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom," has a top-down art style that is reminiscent of "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening," which was released on Switch in September 2019.
In May 2023, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda : Tears of the Kingdom for Nintendo Switch. Originally planned for release in 2022, the sequel was delayed until spring 2023 to allow for more development time. Nintendo previously released The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch and Wii U in March 2017.
